Statins suppress the development of aneurysms: fact or fiction?
نویسنده
چکیده
To the Editor: A recent study on rats demonstrated that statins may suppress the development of cerebral aneurysms.1 Similar results were reported in 2 independent experimental studies investigating the effects of statin therapy on abdominal aortic aneurysms.2,3 Compared with placebo, treatment with simvastatin reduced both the overall extent of aortic dilatation, as well as the incidence of abdominal aortic aneurysm development.2,3 So far, the beneficial effects of statins on abdominal aortic aneurysm progression in humans have only been supported in 2 observational studies including 1304 and 1505 patients, respectively; regarding cerebral aneurysms, there is no similar report up-to-date. Verification of the positive results from animal studies in randomized controlled trials on humans holds implications for the medical management of both abdominal aortic6 and cerebral1 aneurysms.

Drug Therapy for Small Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm
Dear Editor,Abdominal aortic aneurysm is often asymptomatic, less recognized, and causes considerable mortality and morbidity, if missed. The incidence varies from country to country and the occurrence is influenced by modifiable (smoking, coronary heart disease, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and prolonged steroid therapy) and non-modifiable risk factors (increasing age, male gender, and positive...
متن کاملUsing Iron-Chelating Agents in Critically Ill Patients with Iron Overload. Fact or Fiction?
Recently, some evidence has shown that the failure of iron homeostasis may occur in critically ill patients and can lead to iron overload. Elevated ferritin levels as a body iron burden index in critically ill patients may be associated with depressed level of consciousness and greater mortality. However, the necessity of using iron-chelating agents in clinical situation is still unknown for th...

متن کاملStatins promote the growth of experimentally induced cerebral aneurysms in estrogen-deficient rats.
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The pathogenesis of cerebral aneurysms is linked to inflammation, degradation of the extracellular matrix, and vascular wall apoptosis. Statins exert pleiotropic effects on the vasculature, independent of their cholesterol-lowering properties. To explore the detailed pathogenesis of cerebral aneurysms, we examined their progression in a rat model and studied whether stati...
متن کاملRole of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) and MMP inhibitors on intracranial aneurysms: a review article
Cerebrovascular disease is one of the leading causes of death in the world, and about one-fourth of cerebrovascular deaths are due to ruptured cerebral aneurysms (CA). Hence it is important to find a way to reduce aneurysm formation and its subsequent morbidity and mortality. Proteolytic activity capable of lysing gelatin has been shown to be increased in aneurysm tissue and expressio...
